IN YOUR SHOES – an Indo-Norwegian Writing Competition तुम्हारी नज़र से – भारत-नॉर्वे गल्पात्मक लेखन प्रतियोगिता I DINE SKO – SKJØNNLITTERÆR SKRIVEKONKURRANSE

ABOUT/परिचय/OM

IN YOUR SHOES  is a fictional writing competition that takes place in India and in Norway.

Guidelines:

The competition is open for everyone, and aims at collecting good texts that tell something about how ordinary and extraordinary people imagine Norway and the people that live there. The genre is free; you can write a story, an essay, a poem or other literary formats. The only criterion is that the text takes place in Norway. You can write about yourself, from inside someone else’s head, about fictitious people and events, about nature, animals, sentiments. Write from inside or outside; you can choose to have a distance or to take a close approach. Write short or long – maximum five pages (approx. 10 000 signs, including spaces).

Use of the texts:

A selection of the texts will be chosen for publishing. In addition to this the texts will be used in relation to a research project at the University of Oslo. The theme of the project is our perceptions of the Other.

Konkurranseregler:

It says “Konkurransen er åpen for alle”, so I take it that should mean that a Slovenian citizen resident in Cambodia can also compete with an entry, right?

I meant to ask what should be the format of the email? What to write in the subject field? And should the text be attached as a docx. file?

        May 14, 2012

Dear Ujwal, it really does not matter what you write in the subject field.
Maybe something like ” An entry for the writing competition In Your Shoes” ?
Yes, please attach it as a word-file. You may also use other normal formats as pdf, jpeg if that suits you better.
        Best regards

    Hei, flott konkurranse! Til klargjøring så har jeg noen spørsmål;

    1. Er det slik at en kan skrive på norsk?
    2. Foretrekker dere at en skriver på engelsk hvis en kan det?
    3. Deler dere ut en førstepremie til en deltaker som skriver om India og en til en deltaker som legger handlingen til Norge? Eller er det totalt kun en førstepremie?
    4. Har denne skrivekonkurransen vært arrangert tidligere?
    5. Konkurransen ses i sammenheng med et prosjekt på UiO om vår forestilling om de andre. På hvilken måte vil dere bruke tekstene i denne sammenheng?

    Takk!

      Hei Vibeke!

      1. Som norsk deltaker, – skriv gjerne på norsk!
      2. Se over.

      Alt godt

is this competition open only to Indians?

    • indianorway
      April 24, 2012

The competition is an Indo-Norwegian project (announced in Norway and India), but we welcome all nationalities to participate!
You´ll then have to choose which country you will use as the context for your story,- Norway or India.

      Best of luck!

    Hei,

    Flott initiativ.

    Mange takk for svaret!

    Hilsen

    Hello!
if the participant is from India, then can the story take place in India itself,or should it be set only in Norway?

By the way,an amazing idea for a writing contest!

    Thank you.

    • indianorway
      June 1, 2012

The story may take place in India as well, if it still deals with imaginations of Norway and life and people there.

In the report in The Hindu today, the word limit was said to be 2,000 words (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-metroplus/article3478177.ece). But on this page it says 10,000 “signs”. Could you please clarify what the word limit is? Thanks!

    • indianorway
      June 1, 2012

2, 000 word or 10, 000 should be about the same length. It is something like 5 pages.
It does not matter which one of the two you use, just try to keep within one of them!

    Hi Indianorway

Can more than one entry be given by a single participant, like an essay,a poem and a short story,or is each participant restricted to only one entry?

    Thank you.

  15. indianorway
    June 1, 2012

You may participate with more than one entry.

    June 2, 2012

can i get a clarification on the topic please?? i should write about norway from someone else’s perspective but can you be a bit mroe clear about it??

  17. indianorway
    June 7, 2012

    Dear Mathew!

The guidelines are very free, but all you have to do is to make your text to be about Norway, in one way or the other. Shape your text to happen in Norway (all of it/parts of it), make the characters/some of them/all of them to be from Norway, or in Norway or some of the plot to be about or in Norway ect.
Basically try to include your imaginations and thoughts about how Norway and/or Norwegian people appear to be to you. How do you imagine them and life over there?

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

    • indianorway
      June 11, 2012

Yes, you may use internet as a source of information.
It should be a fictional text where you take the use of imagination and fiction, not just an account.

The winners will be made known in September 2012.

If a person that is under age wins, it will be arranged for a safe and well organized journey, don´t worry!

  19. megha baid
    June 11, 2012

so to write a text about norway, we need a background of the place too so does it require little research as well?

    • indianorway
      June 11, 2012

It sounds like a good idea! But there are no rules or guidelines that mention that this is a requirement!
You may also only make use of your imagination and the perceptions and knowledge you already have.

i have exceeded the word limit and sign limit by 250 and 500 each.
